According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, chemists need computer knowledge to perform several tasks, including for:

• modeling tasks,
• simulating tasks,
• managing databases,
• manipulating databases, and
• operating computeralized laboratory equipment.

An example would be the use of three-dimensional software to study the sturcture of substances
